I had the pleasure of meeting this couple last Saturday and I’m so excited to share their images. They have the unique title of being my first solo maternity session and they were great sports as I dragged them down from the Three Rivers Greenway to the Cayce Riverwalk in Columbia, South Carolina. It’s not a super far walk, unless of course you are 32 weeks pregnant! The lighting was gorgeous, and they were interested in getting some “fun” maternity photos but also just some more artistic and beautiful images.
The Riverwalk is actually a series of parks running by the beautiful river system here, which is one of the main attractions and sources of recreation here. The Saluda and the Broad Rivers cut through the heart of the Columbia Riverbanks region, rushing over a stretch of rapids and churning over giant boulders. The Saluda can be run at any level but it’s best when water is released from the Lake Murray Dam. When the flows are normal, series of class I-III whitewater. There is the infamous Class III-IV Mill Race rapids, and when SCE&G is running four or more water turbines, the Saluda becomes a maelstrom of thunderous white-water rapids featuring waves that can approach six feet or more in size! Plus kayakers can surf a curl wave just up stream of the zoo. After about six miles of white water it all mellows out into the sleepy Congaree River.
The Greenway is currently comprised of 3 riverwalks, with lighted and paved trails, boardwalks and overlooks. The West Columbia Riverwalk is accessed by a parking lot on the west side of the Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia, off Meeting Street. The Cayce Riverwalk connects to the West Columbia Rivewalk and its parking lot is located off Axtell Drive in Cayce. The Three Rivers Greenway is open for walking, running or bicycling. Baby carriages and wheelchair accessible.
It was an appropriate back drop for this couple, since Joe is an avid kayaker and they have just recently married and set up house in downtown Columbia. Kate was glowing, and Joe was full of a barely contained new father giddiness that made this couple adorable.
